The Niagara Peninsula sits on the same latitude as Tuscany, but the climate that matters is the moderating influence of two great lakes. The Niagara Escarpment runs east to west, and the sub-appellations along its base — Twenty Mile Bench, Beamsville Bench, Lincoln Lakeshore — are some of the finest cool-climate sites in North America. Two hours east of Toronto, Prince Edward County juts into Lake Ontario like a closed fist of limestone. The soil is the story. The same Trenton limestone that defines parts of Burgundy gives PEC Pinot Noir and Chardonnay a tension and minerality you cannot fake. Norman Hardie pioneered the region with his low-intervention, perfumed Pinots. Closson Chase brought the barrel-fermented Chardonnay.
