    6 servings
    Medium

Cantonese-style BBQ pork with a sticky, sweet glaze and distinctive red color. The combination of honey, hoisin, and five-spice creates an irresistible caramelized crust.

    Ingredients

    Pork:

    • • 1kg pork shoulder, cut into strips

    Marinade:

    • • 4 tbsp hoisin sauce
    • • 3 tbsp soy sauce
    • • 3 tbsp honey
    • • 2 tbsp Shaoxing wine
    • • 2 tbsp brown sugar
    • • 1 tbsp five-spice powder
    • • 4 cloves garlic, minced
    • • 1 tsp white pepper
    • • 2 drops red food coloring (optional)

    Glaze:

    • • 3 tbsp honey
    • • 1 tbsp reserved marinade

    Instructions

    Step 1: Marinate

Combine all marinade ingredients. Add pork strips, coat thoroughly. Marinate 4 hours or overnight. Reserve 1 tbsp marinade for glaze.

    Step 2: Roast

Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F). Place pork on wire rack over foil-lined pan. Roast 25 minutes.

    Step 3: Glaze and Caramelize

Mix honey with reserved marinade. Brush pork, roast 10 minutes. Flip, brush again, roast 10 minutes until sticky and caramelized.

    Step 4: Rest and Slice

Rest 10 minutes, slice across grain. Serve with steamed rice and blanched bok choy.

    Wine Pairing

    Zinfandel (Premier Choice)

California Zinfandel's jammy fruit and touch of sweetness mirror the caramelized char siu glaze while complementing the five-spice.

    Off-Dry Riesling

German Spätlese Riesling balances the sweet-savory flavors with bright acidity and stone fruit notes.
